I Can’t Feel Him, But He’s Still Here

Finding God Beyond Feelings and Religious Routine

PSALM 34:18 (NLT)

“The LORD is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.”

I Can’t Feel Him, But He’s Still Here

▶ Might I Have a Word With You?

Today’s Word

There are seasons in our lives when God feels so close that we can almost sense His presence in everything we do. Prayer comes easily. Worship fills our hearts. His Word seems to speak directly to our circumstances.

But what happens when those feelings disappear?

What happens when you pray and nothing seems to change? When you worship but don't feel the excitement you once experienced? When life becomes so overwhelming that even finding the words to pray becomes difficult?

Does that mean God has left you?

Absolutely not!

One of the greatest misunderstandings we can have about our relationship with God is believing that His presence must always be accompanied by an emotional experience.

We sometimes associate God's presence with tears, shouting, goosebumps, or an overwhelming feeling of peace.

But God's presence is not determined by our emotional response.

Psalm 34:18 reminds us that the Lord is close to the brokenhearted. Notice that God doesn't distance Himself from people because they're hurting. Scripture tells us that He draws near to them.

And here's something worth remembering: being emotionally exhausted doesn't mean you're spiritually abandoned.

Sometimes we are carrying grief, disappointment, unanswered prayers, family difficulties, or personal struggles that leave us feeling empty.

During those seasons, we may struggle to recognize God's presence.

But the absence of a feeling is not evidence of the absence of God.

This is where relationship becomes more important than religious performance.

Religion can sometimes teach us to look spiritual even when we're struggling internally. But a genuine relationship with God allows us to come before Him just as we are.

We can tell Him we're hurting. We can acknowledge our fears. We can confess our doubts.

We don't have to pretend.

Jesus never required people to have everything together before coming to Him.

And neither should we.

Today, don't confuse a quiet season with a disconnected relationship.

God is not waiting for you to manufacture an emotional experience.

He's inviting you to trust Him.

Today’s Challenge

Spend five minutes alone with God today without music, distractions, or an expectation that something dramatic must happen. Simply talk to Him honestly. Tell Him what you’re feeling, what you’re carrying, and what you need. Then take a moment to be still.

Remember

God is just as present in your silence as He is in your shout. Your feelings may change, but His faithfulness remains.

Today’s Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for loving me even when I struggle to recognize Your presence. Forgive me for the times I’ve measured Your faithfulness by my emotions. Help me develop a relationship with You that is rooted in Your Word, strengthened by trust, and sustained by Your love. When my heart is overwhelmed, remind me that You are near. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
