I Have Commitment Issues

There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love." - 1 John 4:18 (NLT)

I, Stephän Edwin Kirby, Sr., have commitment issues. Maybe you do too. One of the most common reasons people struggle with commitment is fear—fear of getting hurt, fear of rejection, or fear of making the wrong decision. We often carry the weight of past wounds or disappointments, which causes us to hesitate when faced with the choice to commit fully, especially in relationships. This fear can make us withdraw, build walls, or even sabotage good things in our lives.

But God’s Word reminds us that perfect love drives out fear. The root cause of commitment issues is often an inability to trust fully—whether it’s trust in God, trust in others, or even trust in ourselves. But the cure is found in experiencing and embracing God’s perfect love. When we realize that God’s love is steadfast and unconditional, it empowers us to trust more deeply and to commit without fear. This love not only heals our hearts but also gives us the strength to be patient with others who may also have commitment issues.

If you struggle with commitment, whether in your relationship with God, with others, or even within yourself, start by acknowledging your fears. Bring them before God and ask Him to fill you with His perfect love. Understand that relationships take time, and patience is key. Be gentle with yourself and with others, knowing that commitment is a journey, not a destination. When you’re patient and loving, you create an environment where trust can grow and fears can be overcome. Remember, God’s perfect love is the foundation for every healthy commitment.

Lord, I confess that I struggle with commitment, and I know that fear is often at the root. Fill my heart with Your perfect love that drives out fear. Help me to trust You more deeply and to be patient with myself and others as we grow in commitment together. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
