Our True City Awaits
"Our True City Awaits"
Good morning Ekklesia
"For here we do not have an enduring city, but we are looking for the city that is to come." (Hebrews 13:14, NLT)
The excerpt from The Third Book of Hermas, Which Is Called His Similitudes reminds us of a profound truth: this world is not our home. We are pilgrims journeying toward an eternal city, a place prepared by God for those who love Him. The message is clear: our focus should not be on accumulating earthly possessions or conforming to the temporary systems of this world, but on living with eternal purpose.
Hermas paints a vivid picture of the spiritual tension we face. While we live in this world, we belong to another. To invest excessively in this life—buying estates, indulging in excess, or building with no thought of eternity—is to lose sight of our true destination. Hermas warns that these earthly pursuits are fleeting and ultimately belong to another. Instead, we are to embrace God’s commands, care for the needy, and trade not in perishable riches, but in heavenly treasures that endure forever.
1. Live as Simple as Possible: Like travelers, carry only what is necessary. Use your resources for eternal impact—support the needy, advocate for justice, and uplift the vulnerable.
2. Focus on God’s Commands: Remember His promises and live in obedience. Invest in relationships and deeds that align with His kingdom.
3. Prepare for Eternity: Do not covet what the world offers; instead, use what God has given you to advance His purposes.
Heavenly Father, we acknowledge that this world is not our home. Help us to live as pilgrims, holding lightly to the temporary and tightly to Your promises. Teach us to use our time, resources, and lives to glorify You and bless others. Strengthen our hearts to resist the allure of worldly riches and focus on the eternal treasures You have prepared for us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
If you have not yet made the decision to follow Christ, I invite you today to embrace Him as your Savior and Lord. He offers a city not built with human hands—a place of everlasting joy and peace. Turn from the fleeting pursuits of this world and surrender your life to Jesus. Join the family of God, where eternal life and unshakable hope await.
As you journey through this life, remember: our true city is yet to come. Live with eternity in your heart, serving God faithfully and joyfully, for what you do for His name will endure forever.
