Reflect Christ’s love—obey, don’t overstep

Good morning Ekklesia

"Obey, Don’t Overstep"

James 4:11 (NLT)

“Don’t speak evil against each other, dear brothers and sisters. If you criticize and judge each other, then you are criticizing and judging God’s law. But your job is to obey the law, not to judge whether it applies to you.”

James, the brother of Jesus, addresses the tendency of believers to criticize and judge one another. Speaking evil against others violates the royal law of love found in James 2:8 ("Love your neighbor as yourself") and oversteps our role as followers of Christ. When we criticize or judge, we assume a position that belongs to God alone, undermining His authority and questioning His wisdom. Instead, our role is to obey God's law, reflecting His love and grace in our interactions.

1. Guard Your Words: Reflect on the power of your words. Instead of tearing others down, use your speech to build up and encourage. Proverbs 18:21 reminds us that "The tongue can bring death or life."

2. Check Your Heart: Before passing judgment, examine your motives. Are you driven by pride or a genuine desire to help? Align your heart with God’s love and forgiveness.

3. Seek Reconciliation: If there are relationships strained by harsh words or judgment, take the first step to reconcile. Extend the grace you’ve received from Christ.

4. Focus on Obedience: Let your energy be directed toward living out God’s commands rather than scrutinizing others. When we walk in obedience, we exemplify Christ’s humility and compassion.

Heavenly Father,

Forgive me for the times I have spoken against my brothers and sisters, forgetting that they, like me, are made in Your image. Help me to guard my words and keep my heart free from judgment. Teach me to obey Your law of love and reflect Your grace in all I do. I surrender my thoughts, words, and actions to You, trusting in Your wisdom and mercy. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Today, let’s commit to being a reflection of Christ’s love in every word and deed. If you’ve been carrying the weight of judgment or harsh criticism, let it go and let Christ renew your heart. If you haven’t yet surrendered your life to Jesus, know that His grace is sufficient for you. We invite you to join us at Ekklesia Christian Life Ministries, where together we grow in Christ as the called-out ones. Visit ekklesiachristianlife.org and take the first step toward discipleship.
