"Sharpen Me, Friend!"
Scripture: Proverbs 27:17 (NLT)
“As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.”
Imagine two blades—dull, rusted, forgotten in a drawer. One day, someone places them edge to edge, rubbing them together. The friction creates sparks, the heat refines, and soon, both are sharper than ever. This is true friendship: not just companionship, but refinement. A real friend doesn’t let you remain dull—they sharpen your purpose, challenge your spirit, and ignite your calling.
Proverbs 27:17 is not merely about casual friendship; it speaks of covenantal sharpening—a mutual growth forged through godly relationship. The Hebrew word for “sharpens” implies continual rubbing or honing. It’s not always comfortable—but it is always necessary. Iron only sharpens iron through contact, connection, and conflict. Godly friends are chosen instruments, used by the Master to refine us for Kingdom impact.
1. Choose friends who challenge your faith, not just comfort your feelings.
Look for those who reflect Christ back to you—even when you don’t want to see it.
2. Be the sharpener, not the duller.
Are you building others up with wisdom, prayer, and accountability?
3. Let the sparks teach you.
Every disagreement isn’t demonic—some are divine sharpening sessions in disguise.
4. Create covenant connections.
Invest in relationships that bring you closer to Christ, not just closer to comfort.
Lord Jesus, I surrender my circle to You. Surround me with friends who sharpen my soul, challenge my complacency, and point me back to You. Help me to be a faithful sharpener in the lives of others. Forgive me for choosing comfort over correction. Today, I open myself to divine friendships—ones that prepare me for purpose. Sharpen me, O God, through Your Spirit and through Your people. Amen.
If you've been walking alone—or surrounded by friends who leave you dull—it’s time for a shift. Jesus is the truest friend, who sticks closer than a brother and laid down His life for you. Come into covenant with Him and be connected to a community like Ekklesia Christian Life Ministries—where we sharpen one another in love, truth, and Spirit.
