Takers and Receivers

Takers and Receivers – Who Do I Give Love To?

"Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back." - Luke 6:38 (NLT)

Dear family of Ekklesia, as a giving person, you often face the challenge of discerning who to give your love to. Life, much like football, involves both offensive and defensive strategies. On the football field, the offense represents the receivers – those ready to accept and benefit from your efforts. The defense, on the other hand, represents the takers – those who block and intercept, hindering progress.

In our lives, the defensive positions symbolize the takers, people who might drain your energy and resources without giving back. They block your path, taking more than they contribute. Conversely, the offensive positions symbolize the receivers – those who open themselves up to receive your love and, in turn, reciprocate it, creating a cycle of giving and receiving.

Luke 6:38 emphasizes the principle of reciprocity in giving. The Greek word for "give" (δίδοτε, didote) signifies an ongoing action, indicating that generosity should be a continuous practice. The promise that our gifts will return to us "pressed down, shaken together, running over" illustrates God's abundant provision and the overflowing blessings that result from a generous heart.

1. Discernment in Giving: Like a quarterback choosing who to pass to, seek God's guidance in discerning who the receivers are in your life. Pray for wisdom to identify those who genuinely need and appreciate your love and support.

2. Healthy Boundaries: Establish boundaries with the takers in your life. Protect your emotional and spiritual well-being by limiting the influence of those who consistently drain you.

3. Cultivate Reciprocity: Engage with individuals who reciprocate your love and generosity. Foster relationships where there is a mutual exchange of support, encouragement, and love.

4. Reflect God's Love: Remember that your ultimate model for giving is Jesus Christ, who gave Himself fully for us. Let His example inspire you to give selflessly but wisely, ensuring that your efforts reflect God's love and bring glory to Him.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of discernment. Help me to identify the receivers in my life, those who truly need and appreciate my love. Guide me in setting healthy boundaries with takers, and teach me to give generously, reflecting Your abundant love. May my actions bring honor to You and foster relationships that glorify Your name. In Jesus' name, Amen.
